FLASHVILLE
or "I Flash Therefore I Am"

Flash is the most influential Web design application of the decade... Before visiting Flashville, learn more about the History of Flash, download a 30-day Free Trial and follow Students Tutorials at www.tomontheweb.ca. Ask Tom and be fantastic!

SET1 SHORT CUTS
PARADE. Launching the intro at www.shamrocking.com you will make the strange Jeroen K.'s parade happy. It's stone crazy. That's all Flash!
3 WOMEN. Many designers are very able to create an original domain name for the web site representing their image online. This is the simplest way to affirm their creative personality since step one of the approach to the Web medium. Plain to see three women did this naming better than other colleagues by creating domains which conjure up their real names, especially if behind all that there is a great 'ego'. An exemplary lesson from Pamela H. at www.pamorama.com, Cyndy J. at www.i-cj.nl, and Sia A. at www.iamsia.com.
WELCOME TO PLANET PAM. YOU MAY ALSO ENTER THE SITE IN NO FLASH MODE!
PORTFOLIO. Portfolios set up online offer us fantastic examples of corporate identities, packaging, trademarks and web sites too. A creative media agency has been building a prominent clients section to put importance into the best works designed and developed for someone else. Jayson S. is the director at www.neonsky.com and this agency has got a graphic style simply essential for a 25-site portfolio.
COME BACK TO FIVE&DIME. Tim F. is providing crucial information on his work, filed into Identity, Print, Web, or Flash. www.asmallpercent.com is really an easy-to-use site .
GANG. A Links section is often representing the group of friends the artist mostly likes. They are usually other pros so you ought to consider this reference as a sort of posse getting off on the same creative interests or projects. A good source of information to keep on visiting cool guys around the world in a click or two... See the People I Like area at www.juliewest.com. Julie W. manages also a mailing list to connect with other people via Internet.
SHORT WELCOME, LONG GOODBYE. Just 381 Kb of download divide the home page at www.vitorvilela.com from the web user visiting this expert in 3D projects. A typical Flash site magnified by the magic reality of animation, so original that it will be though to leave it!
DOUBLE PARK. Steven P. is "a self-taught and continually evolving artist. His work has ranged from airbrush, illustration, and set design for music videos to photography". This is what emerges from the double catalog www.imagecarnival.com accompanying two photographers at the same web location. They are fellows united by the graphic novel --I, Paparazzi-- which further describes their work and ideas as well as incursions into fields they loved and frequented thanks to several artistic qualities.
SPACE 1. "Tokidoki means sometimes in Japanese" (www.tokidoki.it). Simone L. is one of the artists that customized a rabbit doll for the "toy saves children" charity project. His far-out website is so much full of information about him to invite you "come out and meet Tokidoki designer and co-founder at the following locations..." (the list on personal appearances, space and time follows).

SPACE 2. "Kosmonatka means female astronaut in Russian" (www.kosmonatka.com). This is an hybrid flash/html site and probably a perfect model as for the concept developed by Natalia B., senior designer.
AMERICAN PORTRAITS. Shawn B. is a great painter and illustrator of American characters. "Click on icons for larger views" at www.sdbarber.com.
STUDIO. Non conventional graphic designer seems to be creative to the max and his web format suffers within a computer screen. ®BG:Studio is the personal trademark for www.rafaelgarcia.com.br.
COOKIES FORTUNE. Blog is the buzz-word of these days. It works for creative people because it could be a permanent brainstorming about artistic and professional themes. The Milky Blog is led by Stijn P. and launched from www.milkandcookies.be.
M*A*S*H. The Oriental aesthetic culture produce a different attitude to forms. An index made of symbols can be attractive but difficult from the user's side... But things can get in wrong with the player too... At www.fu-design.com the young illustrator Chu send us a message directly from the military service, i.e. the dull environment around don't help him create good works. Mobile Artist Site Help!

SET2 CHAOS AND DESIGN
"If it's true that our work as designers conditions our lives and that our clients condition our work, it is of vital importance to choose our clients carefully. In order to do this, we designers must start from a position of strength and security in our own profession" (from Paul Rand's "Design Form and Chaos", Wyale University Press, 1993).
During his long career Paul Rand established many of the definitions of the term 'graphic designer' and produced a group of logos for important American institutions. If he was asked, «What do you think of the current design situation?», Rand immediately answered, «Are we talking about business or design quality?». Well from the lesson of that undisputed designer, teacher and writer we could believe that Flash is a second cousin to Web design...
YOU DO NOT HAVE THE FLASH PLAYER INSTALLED | RELAUNCH
The fashionable graphics may be gorgeous, but they become a danger when they infringe upon the rules of Web Usability --see some alerts by Jakob Nielsen-- and Design Interactive Systems --see some principles by Yvonne Rogers. Web design quality begins with the refutation of the infinite special effects supplied by the computer. At the end the perfect portfolio site structure has been organized in three areas only, while other areas could be added as optional fields (*), for example
  • PORTFOLIO
  • ABOUT or RESUME
  • CONTACT
  • *MERCHANDISE
  • *DOWNLOAD
  • *LINKS
Making an excellent Web site is difficult enough and explaining it is even more difficult.
The Flash program should be considered a means, like a pencil or a brush, with extremely fast possibilities of application. But the computer is useless if there is no design knowledge. Web designers should first understand what good design is. The selection of these sites and the links pointed out want to bring yourself to the joy of Web design...

(OUTRO) This no-Flash page is silly, no? Impudently inspired by the film director Robert Altman whose master works are a consistent path dominated by an absence of rethoric and academics. His movies resulting from a rigorous discipline in a collective work rich on stories and characters: 49 players in A Wedding, 31 in Prêt-à-Porter, 24 in Nashville, 22 in Short Cuts...
